ABOUT KEN

ESPN called him "Mr. Fishing USA" and the Outdoor Life Network dubbed him "one of the best fishermen on the planet." The Wall Street Journal said his Fishing Encyclopedia was "a treasure," USA TODAY said it was "exhaustive," and The New York Times said it was "a major accomplishment."

Literally tens of millions of people read Ken Schultz’s articles for more three decades in the pages of Field & Stream, and he has seventeen books to his credit, one of them being the aforementioned 1,916-page encyclopedia. If there’s anyone who can authoritatively cover all bases of the sportfishing world, it’s Ken Schultz.

Most recently the Fishing Editor for espnoutdoors.com and a commentator for ESPN2's defunct Saturday-morning show BassCenter, Ken Schultz is widely known as having been a longtime staff writer, and Fishing Editor, of Field & Stream, where he wrote about all types of fishing topics and traveled widely to compile information. He was also a feature contributor to their website, writing about assorted topics and answering reader questions, and also their radio show.

A former nationally syndicated newspaper columnist for Gannett News Service, Schultz was a contributor to the Sports pages of The New York Times throughout the 1990s. His practical fishing tips and Gear Guide segments were long televised on the Outdoor Life Network, and he has appeared on various shows on TNN, ESPN, ESPN2, and even on CNBC, CourtTV, and The Weather Channel. Schultz was Inducted into the Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame in 1998, and is a former holder of seven IGFA-certified fishing world records.

He has written and photographed seventeen books on sportfishing and angling-travel topics. His landmark 1,916-page book, Ken Schultz’s Fishing Encyclopedia & Worldwide Angling Guide, was published in October 1999 to rave reviews around the world, including being featured on the NBC TODAY show and as a selection of the Book-of-the-Month Club. An acclaimed bestseller, it has been translated into several foreign languages. A condensed version is planned for publication in 2009.

Ken Schultz’s popular 1996 book Successful Bass Fishing is widely recognized as one of the best ever written on that topic, and was picked as one of the Top 25 sportfishing books by Field & Stream in April 1999. Of course, that was before the magazine saw his fishing encyclopedia, which covers everything there is to know about bass and some 500 other species.

His most recent works are Bass Madness and Ken Schultz’s Field Guide to Freshwater Fish and Ken Schultz’s Field Guide to Saltwater Fish. The latter two fully illustrated books were simultaneously published in 2004; all three were published by John Wiley & Sons. His large-format coffee-table book, North American Fishing, largely illustrated with Ken’s own photos, was published in October 2001 by Carlton Books, and republished in a revised edition by Creative Outdoors in 2007. A companion book, Spectacular Fishing – Ken Schultz’s Guide to the Great Freshwater & Saltwater Sites in North America – was published in 2003 by Carlton. Also a large-format coffee table book illustrated with Ken’s photos, it focuses on more than 80 of the top places to fish in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
